International Baccalaureate PYP

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for learners between the ages of 3 and 12 years. It is an international, transdisciplinary programme designed to foster the development of the whole child, not just in the classroom but also through other means of learning.

The PYP focuses on the total growth of the child, encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic welfare. The philosophy of the PYP, as it directly affects the child, is expressed in a series of desired attributes and traits that characterise learners with an international perspective. Taken together, they create the IB Learner Profile.

Numeracy

Auburn South fosters the development of numeracy through a structured inquiry approach. This approach, developed by Professor Peter Sullivan,  supports students to actively explore mathematical concepts, developing skills in critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving. Our focus on the ‘Big Ideas in Number’ enhances our approach, as students use concrete materials to explore abstract concepts, deepening their understanding and application of mathematic principles. We aim to enable students to have a positive attitude towards mathematics as we engage them in challenging, meaningful and reflective learning experiences.

Literacy

Auburn South’s approach to writing places students at the centre of the Writers Workshop. Students engage in learning designed to develop their skills and knowledge across genres, to develop both the craft and processes of writing. Teachers provide targeted and responsive feedback to students based on their unique needs and interests, creating a meaningful experience that fosters a love for expression and communication. 

Our reading and spelling approaches draw on the science of reading to develop understanding and application of phonics, phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. This approach enhances students’ understanding of the structure of language and the relationships between sounds and written symbols.

Mandarin

Students develop understanding about the role of language and culture in communication. Their reflections on language use and language learning are applied in other learning contexts.

Learning languages broadens students’ horizons about the personal, social, cultural and employment opportunities that are available in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. The interdependence of countries and communities requires people to negotiate experiences and meanings across languages and cultures.

Physical Education & Sport

The Health and Physical Education program at Auburn South Primary School provides students with the knowledge, skills and behaviors to enable them to develop and maintain their physical, mental, social and emotional health. The program actively promotes the importance of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity through the development of motor skills and movement competence, health-related physical fitness and sport education.

Auburn South students also have the opportunity to participate, compete and experience a variety of sports and activities:

  • Interschool Sport Program
  • Senior and Junior House Athletics Carnivals
  • House Cross Country and School Fun Run
  • House Swimming Carnivals
  • Learn to Swim Program
  • ‘Hoop Time’ Basketball

A large number of students also have the opportunity represent Auburn South Primary School at a number of District, Regional and State level sporting competitions and carnivals.

Performing Arts

At Auburn South Primary School, students have the opportunity to explore the Performing Arts (Drama, Music and Movement) while building confidence and the ability to create, collaborate and express themselves in a variety of ways.

Students also have the opportunity to perform and showcase their performance skills via:

  • Instrumental Music Concerts
  • Year Level Concerts and Performances
  • School Choirs
  • Year 5 / 6 Production
Visual Arts

Using a variety of techniques, materials and media, students in the Visual Art classroom create a range of works that allow them to explore culture, humanity and the world around them. With inspiration taken from a number of influential artists (past and present), students also develop an ability to appreciate a broad range of art styles and forms.

STEM

Through our STEM specialist program, students explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics in hands-on, inquiry based learning experiences. Through these exciting experiences, students explore key concepts to develop critical and creative thinking skills.

Instrumental Music Program

All students at Auburn South Primary School have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. The following private tuition is currently available:

  • Guitar
  • Piano
  • Violin
  • Flute, clarinet, saxophone
  • Group keyboard
  • Group singing

Students also have the opportunity to join one of our string ensembles or the Auburn South concert band.

Camps

Through our camp programs, students explore Victoria, from Phillip Island to the Yarra Valley, for new adventures and challenges. These enriching experiences, offered to students in Years 3 – 6 enhance student independence, confidence and create lifelong memories.
